Why Can’t I Find A Dress That Fits?

Discover the four factors that influence how clothes fit, flatter, and reflect who you are.

When was the last time you tried on some dresses in the store because you need to buy one to attend a summer wedding, and want your photo to look good; however, you became frustrated at the process of shopping?

Why is it so challenging to find that one single dress for that one special occasion? You have weeks, even months to shop, and yet, you are not convinced you found the right dress.

You might conclude that your body is not proportional. Long torso with short legs. Thick arms or round middle. Too much curve or too little. Too square or too round at places.

There are many reasons besides your body shape that prevent you from identifying the type of dresses that actually fit you.

Here are four areas to think about the next time you go shopping for a special dress. I've included tips below to help you navigate the sea of dresses to choose from.

1. Garment design

Choose the right garment, not just the right size.

Many people select clothes because they look good on someone else but forget to look more closely at that other person's coloring, temperament, body proportions, facial features, lifestyle or even personality. But first, know this: Every garment is designed to complement a certain body shape.

If a garment doesn’t look right on you, it’s often because it isn’t the right garment for you. You chose the wrong types of dresses that were not meant for your specific build.

2. Body

Work with your natural body proportions.

Knowing your body shape is only the beginning. Know all your measurements where fit matters. Look at all the details that you like or dislike. Then, evaluate what actually works on you. Be honest about what your natural build looks like; don't force yourself into the wrong dress.

Spend time finding a seamstress to make alterations to the dress, and be open to what can be adjusted on the garment to flatter your figure.

3. Personal Preferences

Dress in a way that reflects who you are.

Consider your lifestyle, personality, color combinations, and the entire outfit that feels natural to you without looking like someone else. Assess whether this dress will become a favorite or a stand-in.

4. Style Direction

Dress with purpose, not impulse.

Before selecting new clothes, ask yourself:

  • Where will I wear these clothes?

  • What image do I want to communicate?

  • How do I want to be perceived?

  • Do these clothes support my style goals?

Take the time to consider your overall sense of style. What does the dress convey to others about you, and does it accentuate your best features that you like about yourself? If you do, so will others.

Summary

Everyone can dress well.

Understanding how garments, body proportions, personal preferences, and style direction work together helps you make better clothing choices.

Learn to create visual balance, highlight your best features, and dress in a way that reflects who you are.
