One Hour to Shop

When you don't have time to browse. Personal style saves time. When you know what suits you, you can shop quickly.

There was a situation when I went shopping with my 16-year-old niece.

Shopping for teenagers can be challenging unless you both understand what she likes, what suits her, and what can be eliminated immediately.

At the beginning, she had no idea what to look for. She felt unsure and somewhat skeptical that we could find anything that suited her without making her feel out of place.

We did not have time to visit every store, and we needed to examine every option to make decisions quickly.

Start with a Clear Direction

The first step was not to start pulling clothes, but to establish a sense of direction after browsing for ideas for a little bit.

We considered what she already liked to wear, the silhouettes that made her feel comfortable, and the details she is attracted to. I pointed out what details she needs to avoid. We looked at her proportions and identified which clothing shapes were most likely to flatter her.

Once we understood those preferences, the search became much more focused.

Scanning the store, we immediately eliminated garments that were too mature, childish, trendy or simply inconsistent with her personality. That left us with a smaller and more manageable selection.

Learn Why Certain Clothes Work

As she tried on different pieces, she began to recognize why certain garments worked better than others. She could see how the shape, length, fit, and design details affected her overall appearance.

The process was no longer about persuading her to wear something. She was learning how to evaluate clothes for herself.

Clarity Makes Shopping Easier

This experience showcased how much easier shopping becomes when you have clear sense of direction. Under time pressure, that clarity helps you narrow your options and conserve both time and energy.

Shopping becomes a chore or difficult when you do not know what you are looking for. Every color, trend, silhouette, and display competes for your attention.

Without a clear understanding of your personal style, it is easy to become overwhelmed. You might purchase something because it is on sale.

Knowing what truly suits you changes the shopping experience.

Personal Style is a Decision-Making System

By the end of our hour together, my niece was no longer skeptical. She has learned what clothing works for her, and developed a clear understanding of what to look for the next time she goes shopping.
